JHANSI – Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has marked a major milestone in India’s high-speed rail journey by commencing the supply of semi-high-speed underslung traction transformers for the highly anticipated Vande Bharat Sleeper Train project.

The first batch of these critical components was flagged off from BHEL’s Jhansi facility on Wednesday, January 14, 2026. The equipment is being transported to Kolkata, where the BHEL-Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd (TRSL) consortium is carrying out the final assembly of the 16-coach sleeper rakes.

Technical Breakthrough: The "Underslung" Advantage

  • The Vande Bharat Sleeper utilizes an advanced underslung design, where the propulsion equipment is mounted beneath the train car rather than inside it. This engineering shift offers two key benefits:
  • Increased Capacity: Frees up significant floor space for additional passenger berths and amenities.
  • Optimized Performance: Features state-of-the-art IGBT-based technology with advanced thermal management, specifically designed for long-distance, overnight journeys.

Multi-Plant Synergy and "Make in India"

The flag-off event, conducted virtually by BHEL Directors Bani Varma (IS&P) and S. M. Ramanathan (Engineering & R&D), highlights the successful coordination across BHEL’s specialized units:

  • Bhopal Unit: Developed and manufactured the high-performance traction motors.
  • Bengaluru Unit: Recently dispatched the first sets of traction converters.
  • Jhansi Unit: Leading the production of traction transformers and RBMVs.

New Order: Rail Borne Maintenance Vehicles (RBMVs)

In addition to the Vande Bharat project, BHEL Jhansi has secured a fresh order for Rail Borne Maintenance Vehicles (RBMVs). These specialized, self-propelled machines are essential for track construction, inspection, and the maintenance of overhead equipment (OHE). By manufacturing these vehicles entirely in India, BHEL is helping the Indian Railways reduce manual dependency and improve track safety through precision maintenance.

As the first Vande Bharat Sleeper rake nears completion in Kolkata, BHEL’s role as a primary technology partner underscores its transition into a high-value, semi-high-speed rail propulsion powerhouse.
