BILASPUR – In a major legal reversal, the Chhattisgarh High Court has convicted Amit Jogi, son of former Chief Minister Ajit Jogi, for the 2003 murder of NCP leader Ramavatar Jaggi. The court set aside a 2007 acquittal and ordered Jogi to surrender within three weeks.
Key Highlights:
- Overturned Acquittal: A division bench overturned the previous ruling following a CBI appeal, which the Supreme Court recently directed the High Court to reconsider due to the "grave nature" of the conspiracy.
- Justice for the Victim: Satish Jaggi, the victim’s son, welcomed the verdict as a victory for truth, ending a 23-year-long legal battle for his family.
- Defense Response: Amit Jogi, president of the Janata Congress Chhattisgarh (J), criticized the swift decision and announced he would move the Supreme Court to challenge the conviction.
The case dates back to June 2003, when Ramavatar Jaggi was shot dead in Raipur. While 28 others were convicted in 2007, Amit Jogi had initially been acquitted until this landmark ruling.
