BILASPUR — South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), a premier subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL), achieved a historic milestone on March 17, 2026, by recording a coal offtake of 170.8 million tonnes (MT). This performance officially eclipses the company’s total offtake for the entire previous financial year with weeks still remaining in the current cycle.

Fueling India’s Energy Security

The record-breaking figures underscore SECL’s critical role in stabilizing India’s power sector and industrial supply chains:

  • Operational Surge: The 170.8 MT mark reflects a significant ramp-up in evacuation and logistics efficiency across its mines in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.
  • National Impact: As a key contributor to the "Energetic Nation" mission, SECL’s consistent supply is pivotal for thermal power plants facing rising peak summer demands in 2026.
  • Logistics Excellence: The achievement was supported by enhanced first-mile connectivity and the commissioning of new railway sidings, ensuring faster coal movement to bulk consumers.

Strategic Outlook

The SECL management credited the milestone to a digitized monitoring system and the dedicated efforts of its workforce. As Coal India targets a billion-tonne production mark, SECL remains the highest-contributing subsidiary, providing nearly one-fourth of CIL's total output.

The company is now expected to set a new all-time high by the close of the financial year on March 31, further solidifying its position as India’s leading coal producer.
