IndianOil and British Columbia Forge Strategic Energy Ties to Accelerate Net Zero
NEW DELHI – Mr. A. S. Sahney, Chairman of Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), held high-level discussions with Hon. David Eby, Premier of British Columbia (B.C.), Canada, in New Delhi on January 13, 2026. The meeting marked a significant step in the "Look West" trade mission led by Premier Eby, aimed at diversifying B.C.'s trade and supporting India's massive energy transition.
Building a Low-Carbon Energy Corridor
The discussions focused on leveraging British Columbia's vast natural resources to meet India's rising energy demand while aligning with Net Zero 2070 goals. Key focus areas included:
- LNG & LPG Supply: Exploration of long-term supply agreements. B.C. is home to several major LNG projects, including LNG Canada, which is nearing full operational status.
- Green Hydrogen: Joint collaboration on production and infrastructure to support the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
- Critical Minerals: Securing supply chains for minerals like copper and nickel, essential for India's booming EV and battery storage sectors.
- Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF): Initiatives to scale SAF production to decarbonize the global aviation industry.
- Upstream Partnerships: Potential joint ventures for exploration and production in Canada's resource-rich basins.
Strategic Context: Trade Diversification
The meeting comes at a time when British Columbia is aggressively seeking to double its exports to non-U.S. markets over the next decade. Premier Eby noted that as India moves toward becoming the world's third-largest economy, it offers "enormous opportunities" for strategic partnerships in clean technology and sustainable resources.
Earlier in the week, Premier Eby and his delegation also met with Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, who emphasized that the India-Canada hydrocarbon trade—already valued at over $226 million in FY 2024-25—holds substantial upside potential.
Commitment to Sustainability
For IndianOil, this engagement aligns with its internal target to achieve operational Net Zero by 2046. By partnering with a stable, resource-rich province like British Columbia, IOCL aims to build resilient energy supply chains that balance traditional hydrocarbon needs with future-ready green solutions.
