Raghav Chadha Calls for End to Menstrual Stigma in Rajya Sabha

NEW DELHI — Addressing the Rajya Sabha on Friday, AAP MP Raghav Chadha made a strong plea to de-stigmatize menstruation, calling the lack of hygiene access a "collective failure" of society. He argued that the nation cannot be truly progressive while 35 crore women and girls face shame over a basic biological fact.

Key Highlights:

  • Taboo vs. Reality: Chadha noted the irony of hiding sanitary pads in newspapers while harmful products are sold openly, stating society has turned "science into silence."
  • Educational Impact: He emphasized that girls missing school due to a lack of pads or private toilets is a systemic failure, not a personal one.
  • National Progress: According to NFHS-5 data, hygiene usage among young women has risen to 77.3%, supported by initiatives like ₹1 'Suvidha' pads at Janaushadhi Kendras.
  • The Goal: Progress will be defined by the day every girl can discuss menstrual health with dignity and without fear.

The MP’s speech highlighted that menstrual hygiene is a fundamental pillar of health, education, and equality, rather than a "side issue" or act of charity.
