Canada Targets "Energy Superpower" Status in India Partnership

NEW DELHI — Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has positioned Canada as a critical "energy superpower" to support India's rapidly growing economy. During bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Carney highlighted Canada's ability to provide the world’s "lowest-carbon" Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and critical minerals.
Key Strategic Pillars:
- Energy Security: Canada aims to meet India's energy demand, which is projected to double by 2040, by providing stable alternatives to Middle Eastern supplies.
- Uranium Deal: A landmark agreement with Cameco will see Saskatoon-based uranium supplied to India starting in 2027 to fuel its nuclear expansion.
- Economic Target: Both nations are working toward a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) to double bilateral trade to $70 billion by 2030.
- Mining & Tech: With 40% of the world’s mining companies listed in Canada, the partnership will focus on securing minerals essential for India's clean energy and manufacturing goals.
This shift marks a significant normalization and expansion of India-Canada ties, focusing on long-term stability and shared industrial growth.
