BPCL Targets ₹25,000 Crore Expansion into City Gas Infrastructure

PANAJI, GOA – Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), a Maharatna PSU and India's second-largest oil marketing company, has unveiled an ambitious ₹25,000 crore investment plan to aggressively expand its City Gas Distribution (CGD) network over the next five years.
The announcement was made by Rahul Tandon, Business Head (Gas), on January 28, 2026, during the India Energy Week (IEW) 2026 held in Goa. This capital infusion is a cornerstone of BPCL’s strategy to transition from a traditional oil refiner into a diversified energy leader.
Key Financial and Operational Milestones
BPCL is significantly scaling up its previous efforts to match the national drive toward a gas-based economy.
- Cumulative Investment: The company has already invested approximately ₹8,000 crore to date. The new commitment brings the total projected spend to over ₹33,000 crore.
- Geographical Reach: BPCL currently operates across 26 Geographical Areas (GAs) spanning 62 districts.
- Expansion Goals: The funds will be utilized to accelerate the rollout of steel and MDPE pipelines, increase Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections for households, and multiply the number of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations for the transport sector.
Long-Term LNG Sourcing Strategy
To support this massive infrastructure, BPCL is securing its fuel supply through a major international procurement drive.
- New 10-Year Tender: The company has received bids from over 10 international players for a long-term LNG supply contract running from April 2026 to 2035.
- Volume Surge: Under this contract, BPCL will source 4 cargoes annually for the first three years (2026–2028), doubling to 8 cargoes annually from 2029 to 2035.
- Demand Projection: BPCL expects its LNG sales to triple, rising from current levels of 2.2–2.4 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 6.5–6.6 MTPA by 2030.
Strategic Significance: "Non-Stop Zindagi"
The investment aligns with the ongoing "PNG & CNG Drive 2.0" campaign launched by BPCL earlier in January 2026. The campaign, themed "Non-Stop Zindagi," promotes natural gas as a safe, reliable, and uninterrupted energy source for modern Indian lifestyles.
"We are confident that in line with the vision of Viksit Bharat, BPCL is accelerating CGD expansion faster than most other entities in the country." — Rahul Tandon, Business Head (Gas), BPCL.
