NHAI Awards ₹181 Crore Bypass to Protect UNESCO Heritage Site

ARIYALUR — The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has awarded a ₹181 crore contract to construct a 7 km greenfield bypass near the Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple. The project aims to divert heavy traffic away from the 1,000-year-old UNESCO World Heritage site on NH-81.

Project Highlights:

  • Route: The two-lane bypass will deviate after Ponneri Lake, run north of the temple complex, and merge near Meensurutti, bypassing the core heritage zone and village.
  • Heritage Protection: By redirecting heavy trucks carrying cement and construction materials, the bypass will significantly reduce structural risks from vibrations, air pollution, and traffic congestion near the temple.
  • Infrastructure: The project includes 3.4 km of service roads, two minor bridges, five vehicular underpasses (VuPs/LVuPs), and eight box culverts.
  • Timeline: Construction is expected to be completed within one year.

Benefits for Travelers:

Commuters traveling between Trichy, Chidambaram, and Chennai will benefit from reduced travel time. For tourists and pilgrims, the project ensures a safer, quieter approach to the Chola-era monument, removing the current safety hazards posed by frequent heavy vehicle movement.
