Delhi Infrastructure Push: New Yamuna Bridge and Elevated Corridor to Declog East Delhi

NEW DELHI — The Delhi government is set to unveil a major infrastructure package aimed at transforming the Trans-Yamuna region. The proposals, reviewed during a high-level site inspection on March 19, 2026, by PWD Minister Parvesh Verma and Trans Yamuna Area Development Board Chairperson Arvinder Singh Lovely, are expected to seek financial allocation in next week’s budget session.
Bridging the Gap: The "Loha Pul" Successor
At the heart of the plan is a new bridge across the Yamuna to improve connectivity between East and Central Delhi.
- The Options: The government is considering replacing the iconic but "outdated" Old Iron Bridge (Loha Pul) or constructing a new structure near the Signature Bridge.
- Feasibility Study: The Trans Yamuna Area Development Board has been tasked with surveying the entire stretch from Wazirabad to Kalindi Kunj to identify optimal traffic distribution points.
- Rail Synergy: With railway authorities constructing a parallel structure to divert train traffic, the redevelopment of the existing Loha Pul site has become a viable technical possibility.
The 4km Elevated "Trunk" Corridor
To address the chronic congestion on Swami Dayanand Marg, a new elevated corridor is planned along Trunk Drain 1:
- Route: The road will originate near Shyamlal College/Bihari Colony (near Shahdara flyover) and terminate at the Karkari Mor flyover.
- Impact: This bypass is designed to declog the vital artery connecting Anand Vihar to Shahdara, significantly reducing travel time for commuters in Northeast Delhi.
Reviving Gandhi Nagar Market
The board is also fast-tracking the redevelopment of Gandhi Nagar, Asia’s largest wholesale garment market:
- The Blueprint: A consultant has been appointed to survey the hub and address long-standing grievances regarding broken roads, poor drainage, and lack of drinking water.
- Economic Goal: The project aims to modernize the market's civic infrastructure to match its status as a global commercial powerhouse, moving beyond previous plans that remained on paper.
