Delhi Approves ₹3,100 Crore Road Overhaul to Link South and East Delhi

NEW DELHI — Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has approved two massive infrastructure projects aimed at eliminating traffic bottlenecks across the capital. With a combined investment of over ₹3,100 crore, the initiatives target the perennially congested Barapullah and Mehrauli-Badarpur (MB) corridors.
1. Barapullah Phase-III Extension
Project Cost: ₹1,635 crore (revised).
- Scope: Connecting Sarai Kale Khan to Mayur Vihar.
- Impact: Once finished, it will provide a signal-free run from East Delhi to AIIMS in South Delhi.
- Deadline: The government has set an ambitious completion target of June 30, 2026.
2. Mehrauli-Badarpur Double-Decker Corridor
- Project Cost: ₹1,471 crore.
- Execution: To be handled by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).
- Phase 1: An integrated double-decker structure between Saket G-Block and Sangam Vihar, featuring a six-lane flyover and multiple underpasses.
- Phase 2: A 2.48-km elevated flyover built directly above the Delhi Metro tunnel from Maa Anandmayee Marg to Pul Prahladpur.
Strategic Benefits
The CMO stated that these projects will significantly reduce travel times for lakhs of daily commuters and decongest major arteries including NH-24, the DND Flyway, and Ring Road. By integrating road flyovers with Metro tunnels (double-decker model), the city aims to maximize space efficiency in densely populated South Delhi neighborhoods like Khanpur and Ambedkar Nagar.
