India’s Clean Energy Push: 6,600 MW Nuclear & 11,620 MW Pumped Storage Underway

NEW DELHI — Power Minister Manohar Lal informed the Lok Sabha that India is rapidly scaling its non-fossil fuel infrastructure, with 6,600 MW of nuclear capacity and massive energy storage projects currently under construction.
As of January 2026, India’s total installed capacity has reached 520,511 MW, with renewables accounting for over 50.6% of the mix.
Nuclear & Hydro Expansion:
- Nuclear Power: 6,600 MW is under construction (targeted by 2029-30), with another 7,000 MW in the planning stages. Current capacity stands at 8,780 MW.
- Hydroelectric: 12,723 MW of projects are currently being built, with an additional 4,274 MW planned for completion by 2031-32.
Energy Storage & Grid Stability:
To support renewable integration, the government is heavily investing in storage:
- Pumped Storage (PSP): 11,620 MW is under construction, with another 6,580 MW cleared for future development.
- Battery Storage (BESS): Nearly 9,654 MW is under construction, while over 19,797 MW is currently in the tendering phase.
FY 2025-26 Progress:
India added 52,536 MW of generation capacity in the current financial year (up to January 2026), marking a significant stride toward its long-term green energy goals.
