ONGC CSR Brings India's First Non-CT Robotic Knee Surgery to BHU

VARANASI — In a major boost to public healthcare, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has funded a state-of-the-art robotic-assisted knee surgery system at the Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU Trauma Centre.

This CSR initiative makes BHU the first government medical institution in India to adopt non-CT-based robotic technology, providing high-precision orthopaedic care to patients from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and beyond.

Key Highlights:

  • Enhanced Precision: The robotic system ensures personalized implant positioning, leading to less pain and faster recovery. The first successful surgery was recently performed on a 74-year-old patient.
  • Affordable Access: ONGC is providing consumables for 100 economically vulnerable patients, enabling subsidized surgeries under the Ayushman Bharat scheme.
  • Training Hub: The facility will serve as a national center for training orthopaedic surgeons in advanced robotic-assisted surgical techniques.
  • Regional Impact: By bringing metropolitan-level technology to a public hospital, the project eliminates the need for patients in the region to travel to private hospitals in distant cities.

This collaboration marks a significant step in modernizing India’s public health infrastructure through corporate-led surgical innovation.
