NRL Achieves Major Milestone in 6 MMTPA Expansion Project with Commissioning of Crude Oil Integration Facility

NUMALIGARH – Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) has marked a pivotal moment in its expansion journey with the successful commissioning of the Crude Oil Integration Facility (COIF) on December 31, 2025. The milestone, achieved following formal approval from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO), clears the way for the refinery to scale its operations significantly.
Following the activation of the COIF, NRL successfully executed the "Oil In" activity at the Crude Distillation Unit and Vacuum Distillation Unit (CDU/VDU). This procedure represents the first critical operational step toward the full commissioning of the refinery’s "mother unit."
The integration of the COIF is a cornerstone of the Numaligarh Refinery Expansion Project (NREP). This ambitious initiative aims to triple the facility's refining capacity from 3 MMTPA to 9 MMTPA at its site in the Golaghat district of Assam.
The inauguration and subsequent "Oil In" operations were led by Shri Girish Kumar Borah, Director (Technical) of NRL. The event was attended by senior NRL officials and representatives from the various consulting and contracting firms responsible for the project's execution.
As NRL moves into the phase-wise commissioning of remaining units, the project continues to stand as one of the most significant energy infrastructure developments in Northeast India. Company officials noted that the achievement reinforces NRL’s role in bolstering India’s energy security and driving regional economic development through self-reliance in the petroleum sector.
